Something you adore

I almost did the daddyblogging thing here and put a picture of my family. But it does say something you adore, not someone.  Plus I can probably pull that stunt with something you made on day 25 (I won’t).

I like Whisky.

So I like Whisky. but do I adore Whisky? No I don’t. All right I may on certain occasions. But that’s not my answer.

Something I adore would have to be something that I would never part with. There’s not much that I would terribly miss when it comes to material possessions – not because I’m all Zen and stuff – just because it is the way I am. Strangely enough, LovelyWife and I had this very similar talk recently, where she asked me what five items I would definitely save from our burning house, if I could save only five.

I had trouble coming up with a fourth item, and only did so because the rules of “save items from the fire” are somewhat malleable. ;-) The items I identified at the time were:

1) A poster.

My poster announcing the upcoming release of the Lord of the Rings (1978).

This poster was hung in a locker in my aunt appartement building’s basement, behind a whole bunch of old newspapers. When I helped her move stuff down there, I asked her if I could have the half-hidden poster, she said she didn’t mind since it was there when she got there, and why would I want an old poster? This gem now hangs in my office.

2) A longsword.

My longsword.

This longsword was given to me on my 30th birthday by my best friend Martin. I had given him a 30 year old bottle of Whisky a few months before, and he gave me this when my birthday rolled around. This sword also hangs in my office.

3) A guitar.

The first guitar I bought myself.

A six-strings Ibanez that I got from my neighbor for a lot of money at the time (in hindsight, it was next to nothing), and that has tremendous sentimental value. That guitar also hangs – you guessed it – in my office.

That’s it. The rest of the stuff in my house? I can easily live without it. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of stuff in my house I’m nowhere near living the minimalist lifestyle. There’s an espresso maker that comes to mind, a giant TV, a computer, a second guitar, books, a couple of iPads, a digital camera, a Wii and so on. But all of these are replaceable, and they hold no sentimental value to me.

If you have one thing to take away from this post at this point, it’s that if you ever rob my house to piss me off, take what’s in my office. If you’re looking for valuables, avoid the office. ;-)

The fourth item I added to the list after the rules of the game were “clarified” is the one thing that I adore over all other things. Why didn’t this item made the original list? Simply because this item never ever leaves me, so in my mind I would never have to run into my burning home to retrieve it.

4) A ring.

My wedding ring.

I’ve been with LovelyWife for more than half of my life at this point. It goes without saying that what this ring represents is a major part of the man I am. But the ring itself has a tremendous sentimental value for me.

A little over 16 years ago when we decided to get married we were not the richest people in the world. LovelyWife’s wedding ring is in fact her Mother’s ring – my In-Laws had been happily divorced for over 15 years at that point, and FMIL was happy to give her daughter her wedding ring. When we told my Father-in-Law we were getting married, we also told him that LovelyWife had her mom’s ring.

In a very touching gesture, my Father-in-Law gave me his wedding ring, and his blessing to do with it as I wanted. Words can’t accurately express how significant this event is for me… After the birth of my kids, LovelyWife’s Grandfather’s last meal and possibly the actual wedding, I would say that this event is definitely in the most significant events of my life.

Breakfast

Mimosas totally count as breakfast.

To be fair, that’s yesterday’s breakfast. Because seriously how long would a bottle of Champagne last after the New Year’s party?

Speaking of party, I think my son might be the next Hugh Hefner.

You

The world is supposed to end this year right? No need for a haircut then. ;-)

More seriously, Happy New Year everyone. I wish you all the best, and a little more for 2012.

2011 Recap

Hi guys!

The year is rapidly ending. Whenever I reach a new milestone, I like to take a look back and see what I have been up to. Here’s a little recap of the stuff I did in 2011, according to me.

In January, I went through yet another identity crisis, and I thought about changing my tagline. Luckily, the wisdom of the Internet told me otherwise.

To compensate, I decided in February to be nice to 10 people a day for a week. It worked out well, and I wonder why I’m not doing this again (still?). Maybe I will start being nice again. ;-)

In March, a tsunami pretty much destroyed Japan, I got an iPad2 and composed an ode to Becky’s Butt.

A couple of days late for April’s Fool’s day, I found my dad in a chatroulette video. ::shudders::

And then May arrived, and I finally went to Scotland! Of course, I before I left I debated bringing a tripod or not, and that produced a rather funny exchange at work…

In June, I recapped Scotland. To make sure I didn’t ride the Scotland high too long, my son got shot in the park on Father’s day.

Then July rolled around, and other than flipping about the price of gas, I didn’t do much.

August saw me do crazy things that didn’t work too well, and I discovered the “unfriend” button on Facebook, both for me and my Daughter’s account.

I only blogged four times in September. It was a pretty crazy month. I managed to produce five whole posts in October, but this one is probably my favo(u)rite post of the last year.

In November I acquired the items I needed to start my very own clone army, but got a surprise in the process. Also, I celebrated 20 years (16 married) with the same LovelyWife.

And that brings us to December, where I poked fun at some email issues I had and some funny stuff happened at work – Thanks to bossman.

And that’s all there is to it.

Goodbye 2011.

Suspended in dusk…

The toxic rays of dawn that condemn me to limbo
I am forced to dwell in grey Autumnal twilight
I am suspended in dusk
– Type O Negative, Suspended in Dusk [#]

It’s been 15 days since my last blog post.

Yes, this is one of those posts about not posting. Yes, this is a blog post about blogging, or not blogging as the case may be.

If you’re a fan of LeSombre, you most probably noticed that the blogging frequency here has been less than stellar in the past six months or so. There’s a whole lot of reasons for that, most of them too personal to mention here. To be honest, I have more than 20 incomplete drafts that will never see the light of day.

I know, I know. When you’re having fun publicly, it’s kind of expected that you’d be miserable publicly too. I don’t get this. I won’t abide by that rule.

In any event, this being the end of the year, it seemed a good moment to put some thoughts on paper. I read something on a blog recently – in the past few months – that really resonated with me. I forget the exact quote or the blog where it came from, I’m really sorry, but it went something like this:

The more I blog, the less I have to talk about.

That’s exactly what is happening with me. Not that I think I’m a world renown blogger, but I am more known now than I was when I started writing here. Way back when, it was easy to write stories about my life in a way where I could say all kinds of – sometimes nasty – stuff about people I knew without sounding like it was about them. Nowadays, I’m hard pressed to find a way to blog about a frustrating experience without people thinking it’s about them.

Sometimes it is, and I can live with that. Sometimes it’s not, and that’s when it gets hard to hit publish.

That’s the curse of being the guy who can see a thousand possibilities at once. You can be sure that somewhere, someone is thinking that this is about them.

It was never about you. I still need to vent. This is the place that I do that. It was never about you. It was always about me.

It’s always about me. I’m back baby.

Damn me father, for I must sin…

Protip: Use BCC when emailing 473 people

My son’s school decided to go green and stop sending us paper notifications through the kids’ backpacks.

That’s awesome, unless you put all 473 email adresses in the CC field. Sure, it’s not that bad when you read the email on GMail through a regular browser:

Notice how 469 of those email addresses are somewhat hidden from you? Meaning that with just one click, I could have access to 472 new friends. Friends that I can send funny LOLCATS or motivational 7Mb PowerPoint files. Worst, there’s now potentially 472 friends that can send me funny LOLCATS and motivational 7Mb PowerPoint files.

Luckily, I didn’t use my main GMail address. Unfortunately, I first opened this email on my iPhone. Can you guess what it looks like when you open an email addressed to 473 people? It looks like this:

Actual emails, blurred because I’m a nice man.
Fun Facts: It took me 3 minutes to do the 49 screen captures needed, and about 25 minutes to Photoshop all the pictures in one giant 16397px long strip. Even at the lowest quality setting, this image still weighs 600K.

So to summarize:

  1. Avoid the CC Field when emailing to more than 10 people.
  2. Scrolling on an iPhone is a pain in the ass.
  3. The pain that I’ll go through to prove a point is just ridiculous.
  4. This is by far the longest post I’ve ever written, although this one came pretty close.
  5. This is not the dumbest post I’ve ever written. Not even close. ;-)

#NoMoreBullies

It was about a month ago now that Stuntman Stu (@Stuntmanstu) tweeted this picture:

Stuntman Stu – #NoMoreBullies

I immediately thought that I had to something to support that campaign. Obviously writing #NoMoreBullies on my hand and posting a picture would be the easiest part. Liking the “No More Bullies” Facebook page would also be painless. What else could I do?

I decided to wait about a month before doing anything. For starters, it would give me time to reflect a little more on the whole thing and I thought that if the #NoMoreBullies movement was to slow down a little, it wouldn’t be a bad thing to have people “jump in” a little later. Not that I think my meager contribution will make a big difference, but it can’t make things worst, right?

A blog post

Writing a post about bullying / stopping bullies would help spread the message. What tone to use? I try to be a funny guy, but bullying is no laughing matter. On the other hand, I gotta be me. I’m still debating this. We’ll see what will happen.

Buying some stuff

Another thing I’m good at is buying some stuff. I like t-shirts, I like mugs. Surely there must be some sort of item I can buy to support the #NoMoreBullies cause. A quick search on Zazzle tells me otherwise. No stuff with the #NoMoreBullies hashtag? That sounds like something I can definitely do.

#NoMoreBullies Stuff on Zazzle

So go ahead, and buy some #NoMoreBullies stuff, either a lovely mug or an awesome t-shirt or both if you want! I will donate all the profits I’ll make from the sale of these items to any charity StuntmanStu thinks will help the most.

I’m still thinking about that blog post. Stay tuned.

Pillow

If you read Avitable (and if you don’t what’s wrong with you?) you know that last Friday Adam posted a bunch of things he wanted to sell in a Black Friday spirit, and you probably know that I expressed interest in the New Moon pillow, because 1.25$ to start my Avitable Clones Army is a steal.

New Moon pillow case – 1.25$

Express air shipping – 24.97$

Black Light – 34.95$

Discovering that Adam plays for both teams (Edward and Jacob) – Priceless.

Tungsten

Tungsten /ˈtʌŋstən/, also known as wolfram /ˈwʊlfrəm/ (wuul-frəm), is a chemical element with the chemical symbol W and atomic number 74.

A hard, rare metal under standard conditions when uncombined, tungsten is found naturally on Earth only in chemical compounds. It was identified as a new element in 1781, and first isolated as a metal in 1783. Its important ores include wolframite and scheelite. The free element is remarkable for its robustness, especially the fact that it has the highest melting point of all the non-alloyed metals and the second highest of all the elements after carbon.

Still here? Good.

Look at that nice mane of hair. And LovelyWife’s hair is not bad either.

Sixteen years ago LovelyGirlfriend became LovelyWife. This is our Tungsten anniversary. Like Tungsten, being married 16 years is a hard and rare thing. Like Tungsten, we are remarkable for our robustness, and I have a really high melting point.

LovelyWife likes to set things on fire (that’s the carbon reference) including my heart.

And that’s a W. ;-)

Happy Anniversary Honey! XXX

Bureaucracy

I once posted a picture from my old workplace that I thought summarized the many reasons why bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy doesn’t work.

I can’t find this picture right now – I’m sure I still have it somewhere – but use your imagination and picture a bathroom stall lock, screwed with six screws. Now imagine that those six screws are all different from one another.

Sure, one can argue that this way, nobody can pull a prank and unscrew the locks on a spur of the moment idea. But the end result was most likely that when the lock needed to be changed, it took much longer for the maintenance guy to do it.

I now experienced a whole new level of bureaucracy that puts the “six different screws experience” to shame.

A few days ago, maintenance was called to remove some sliding windows from a couple of display cases. The cases are in a corridor. Maintenance came and removed the windows from the display cases, and stored them in a nearby office.

The stuff that needed to be done is now done, so maintenance was called to re-install the sliding windows on the display cases.

Two guys came, looked at the cases, looked at the sliding windows in the nearby office and then told the person who placed the call that they couldn’t move the windows from the office to the corridor, that the requisition only said that the windows needed to be installed, not moved. A new requisition has to be made for them to comeback and move the windows.

I kid you not.

If you’re shaking your head in disbelief, or if you’re laughing your ass off at the stupidity of this whole situation, let me add one layer of dumbness to what’s already there:

The two guys that came today? The same two guys that removed and moved the windows a couple of days ago.

Let’s top this with a cherry of stupidity:

I’m willing to bet that the same two guys that will come back to move the windows next week.

Boo!

So… I took these pictures of my house on Halloween.

After noticing that green dot on the first one, I took nine more in rapid fire mode…

Any idea what that green dot is?

I called dibs many years ago

Dear Canada,

Just a friendly reminder that in the “Beaver vs Polar Bear” debate, I called dibs on the Polar Bear years ago when I separated from Canada and formed my very own country called Canadia. Following an especially drunk-ish Halloween party, Miss Britt was appointed as our Queen and Sovereign (just on paper).

Like you I had my doubts in the past and almost got a new tagline for my blog. But after a lot of careful considerations, I stuck with the Canadia / Polar Bear thing.

The Canadia thing is right there in my header, see?

I admit that I really like the Beaver, I even have my very own Beaver Day. This is all official because a very famous New-Yorker said so. However, I started using the Polar Bear as far as Christmas 2008 (as stated in this Christmas 2009 post) and there are a few letters dating from November 2008 that can prove this.

The Polar bear emblem is right there in my sidebar.

Also, I started this “LOLPolarBearz” Internet Craze.

So fair warning to you Canada: The Polar Bear is a really cool emblem, and I don’t blame you for wanting it for your great nation, but it’s mine. All mine.

So back off.
