Happy Pi Day!

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Yesterday was Pi Day. And being married to a mathematician, we did celebrate that glorious day. ;-)

It started with Pizza Pi for lunch.

Followed by Maple Syrup Pi for dessert after dinner

And we had another piece of Pi as a snack later that night.

Unfortunately for me, it looks like Pi Day will be followed by Salad Week. ;-) So how did you celebrate Pi Day?

EDIT: Here’s the translated Maple Syrup Pie recipe. The original can be found here.

Sugar Shack Pie

Prep Time : 30 min
Cooking Time : 30 min
Cooling Time : 3 h
Portions : 8

Ingredients

Crust

250 ml (1 cup) all-purpose flour, unblanched
15 ml (1 tblspoon) sugar
1 pinch of salt
75 ml (1/3 cup) cold unsalted butter, cubed
1 egg
15 ml (1 tblspoon) cold water

Filling

45 ml (3 tblspoon) corn starch
45 ml (3 tblspoon) water
375 ml (1 1/2 tasse) maple syrup
60 ml (1/4 cup) whipping cream 35 %
1 egg, lightly beaten
30 ml (2 tblspoon) unsalted butter

Directions

Crust

  1. In your food processor bowl, mix the flour, sugart and salt. Add cubed butter and pulse a few seconds at a time until the butter is the size of small peas. Add the egg and water. Mix until the dough starts to come together. Add water if needed. Take the dough out of the food processor and form a disc by hand.
  2. On a floured work surface, roll the dough and cover a 9″ pie dish. Let it cool down in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat over to 220 °C (425 °F). Put the rack at the lowest position.
  4. Cover your unbaked crust with aluminium foil, and place some dry beans on top. Bake for 10 minutes. Take the aluminium and beans out, and bake for about 10 more minutes or until golden brown. Let the crust cool down.

Filling

  1. In a saucepan – before heating it up – mix the cornstarch and the water. Add the maple syrup, the cream and the egg. Mix well.
  2. Slowly bring to a boil, while constantly mixing with a whip. Let boil for about one minute. Add tghe butter and mix until its completely melted. Pour in crust. Let the pie cool down and refrigerate for about 3 hours.
  3. Serve with vanilla ice cream (optionnal)

March 14th is also a very special holiday, and even if it’s overshadowed by Pi Day – pretty much in the same way Michael Jackson’s death overshadowed Farrah Fawcett – it still worth celebrating.

There’s no pictures for that one, as I’d like to keep celebrating it. Sorry!

Reason #7,498

To move to the USA.

I hate it when I see that!

I bet you if there was a Canadian Hulu – Most probably called Eh-lu – you would see a fairly different message:

Stoopid CRTC.

…and in walks the biggest Mexican I have ever seen.

He had to start somewhere.

We’re celebrating AudaciousSon’s Birthday a few days earlier. He turns nine on Monday.

Idiot

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

This is the part where you laugh, point and call me an idiot.

I’ve been trying to upgrade the “kid’s PC” – to make it the family PC – for the past few days. I pulled out the old CD ROM (Reader only) and replaced it with a DVD Reader / Writer I had doing nothing. Since all of tis is part of my plan to consolidate 3 PCs into one, I figured I was also going to install the 300GB HDD I had in my old AMD K6 PC as a secondary HDD in the new system.

Once finished, the new Frankenstein system is a P4 3GHz, 2GB RAM, primary HDD is 40GB, secondary HDD 300GB, CD/DVD R/W running WinXP. Not bad for a system I built from 3 PCs I already had plus a few random parts I had lying around.

Except if it had been that easy, I wouldn’t blog about it, n’est-ce pas?

You see the addition of the second HDD and CD/DVD combo had meen kicking my ass for the past 3 days. I couldn’t figure out why the new devices wouldn’t show neither in the BIOS or in the system. I looked online and they suggested I check my cables connections. Of course they’re firmly attached to the devices. Duh. Then I played with the jumpers. I normally leave everything to “Cable Select” but I was told that computer might be a little weird about the cable select, so I master/slave them on the secondary IDE, making sure again that the cables were properly secured. No dice. Eventually, I decided to troubleshoot properly by only adding the DVD combo to the end of the cable, to see if maybe the HDD was dead or something. So I unhooked the cable from the HDD…

That’s when the other end of the IDE cable – the one “connected” to the MotherBoard hit the bottom of the case.

Sonovabitch. That end was not properly connected to the MotherBoard. Sonovabitch.

This is the part where you laugh, point and call me an idiot.
