At first I'd considered it might be an elevation thing -- Denver comes in at over 5280 feet, while Ottawa is closer to 240 feet (80M). But I have the same problem when I'm in White Rock, BC, which is right at 260 (70M) feet above sea level (and parts of it that I've been to are actually under the sea).
